Mission: Impossible is an action film released in 1996. It was directed by Brian De Palma and stars Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt. The plot follows Hunt’s (Tom Cruise) mission to uncover the mole within CIA who has framed him for the murders of his entire IMF team. Work on the script had begun early with late filmmaker Sydney Pollack on board, before De Palma, Steven Zaillian, David Koepp, and Robert Towne were brought in. In fact, the film went into pre-production without a shooting script. De Palma came up with some action sequences, but neither Koepp nor Towne were satisfied with the story that leads up to these events.

U2 band members Larry Mullen Jr. and Adam Clayton produced their own version of the original theme song. The song went into top ten charts around the world and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. The movie was the third highest grossing of the year. It is the first movie based on the television series of the same name and was followed by two sequels, Mission: Impossible II (2000) and Mission: Impossible III (2006).

Plot

Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) is an agent of an Impossible Missions Force (IMF) team, an unofficial branch of the CIA. Led by Jim Phelps (Jon Voight), the team assembles for a mission in Prague to prevent an American diplomat from selling the Non-official cover (NOC) list – a comprehensive list of all covert agents in Eastern Europe. The mission goes hopelessly wrong, resulting in the deaths of the diplomat and every team member except Hunt. Fleeing the scene, Hunt meets with Eugene Kittridge (Henry Czerny), the CIA-based director of the IMF, at a café. Kittridge discloses that the NOC list in Prague was a fake meant to draw out a mole who has infiltrated the IMF and made a deal to sell the list to an arms dealer known as “Max.” Suspicion now falls on Hunt, the only survivor of the botched mission, who makes a daring escape from the café and flees into the city.

Hunt returns to the IMF safe house, where he discovers that fellow agent Claire Phelps (Emmanuelle Béart), Jim Phelps’s wife, actually survived the mission. He begins correspondence with Max (Vanessa Redgrave), warning her about the fake NOC list and offering to deliver the real one in exchange for $10 million and a face-to-face meeting with the mole, nicknamed “Job.” Max agrees to the deal and gives Hunt a cash advance, which he uses to hire two blacklisted or disavowed intelligence agents: computer expert Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames) and pilot Franz Krieger (Jean Reno). Hunt, Stickell, Krieger, and Claire infiltrate the heavily fortified headquarters of the CIA in Langley, Virginia, and successfully steal a copy of the full NOC list before escaping to a safe house in London. Once there, Hunt discovers that his uncle and mother have been falsely arrested for drug trafficking in an attempt by Kittridge to lure him out of hiding. This infuriates Hunt, and he contacts Kittridge, who offers to drop the false charges the moment Hunt surrenders to authorities. Hunt stays on the line long enough for Kittridge to trace him to the London area, then hangs up and finds Jim Phelps standing right next to him.

Phelps, presumed dead in the Prague operation, says that Kittridge is the mole and is trying to tie up loose ends by arresting Hunt. Hunt reflects on this, while mentally piecing together clues he has discovered along the way and concluding that Phelps is the mole, Job. Hunt pretends to accept the story, understanding that Krieger has assisted Phelps, but is still doubtful about Claire’s place in the conspiracy. The next day, Max and Hunt arrange to meet aboard the TGV en route to Paris, with Claire and Stickell aboard to provide backup. Kittridge is also aboard, having recently arrived in London and received tickets for the TGV and a video watch from Hunt. Aboard the train, Hunt delivers the NOC list to Max, who directs him to the luggage compartment to find Job and his money. Max then attempts to transmit the NOC list to a server, but Stickell activates a jamming device to prevent the upload. Claire, observing Kittridge’s presence aboard the train, vacates her seat and meets with Phelps in the luggage car, confirming her part in the conspiracy. A silent “Phelps” slowly peels his face away, showing it as a mask and revealing himself as Hunt. They are interrupted by the arrival of the real Phelps, armed and demanding that Hunt hand over the money paid to him by Max. Hunt does so, then puts on a pair of glasses with a camera built into the bridge; the image of Phelps’ face is transmitted to the video watch carried by Kittridge, giving the latter undeniable proof of Job’s true identity.

Claire tries to persuade Phelps not to kill Hunt, but he kills her instead, knocks Hunt down, and climbs up to the roof. Krieger has been following the train in a helicopter and is waiting to extract Phelps. Hunt recovers and follows Phelps, impeding his efforts to escape and tethering Krieger’s helicopter to the train as it heads into the Channel Tunnel. The fight continues, with the helicopter now following the train inside the tunnel. The two fight atop the wind-swept train before Phelps disconnects the helicopter from the train and attempts to escape. Hunt follows, leaping onto the helicopter’s landing skids and attaching explosive chewing gum to the windshield. The ensuing explosion kills Phelps and Krieger, with Ethan narrowly escaping. Now in possession of the NOC list and Max’s true identity, Kittridge reinstates Stickell as an IMF agent and drops his investigation against Hunt, who resigns from the IMF. As he flies home, a flight attendant approaches him and asks, through a coded phrase, if he is ready to take on a new mission.

In the pre-title sequence, James Bond leads a team to infiltrate a North Korean military base belonging to Colonel Tan-Sun Moon, an army officer who is illegally selling weaponry in exchange for African conflict diamonds. Bond poses as a weapons dealer, rigging his briefcase of diamonds with C4. He meets Moon and his assistant, Zao, to whom he gives the diamonds for inspection, but during the exchange, Zao’s PDA downloads Bond’s true identity from an unknown source, and Zao informs Moon, who then demonstrates one of the weapons to Bond, using it to blow up the chopper on which Bond flew in undercover. Colonel Moon learns that his father, General Moon, is approaching, and orders the weapons hidden and Bond killed, taking flight in a large hovercraft. Bond detonates the C4, embedding several diamonds in Zao’s face. He then steals another hovercraft and pursues Colonel Moon, who tumbles over a waterfall, still on his hovercraft, and Bond believes him to be dead. No sooner does Bond himself evade death than North Korean troops capture him under General Moon’s orders, and he is imprisoned and tortured.Fourteen months later, Bond is released in exchange for Zao, who was captured during that time. He is sedated and taken to a frigate off the coast of Hong Kong, where M informs him that his 00 status is suspended because the allied forces believe that he may have leaked information under duress. Determined to take Zao out and find out who betrayed him, Bond escapes the frigate and swims to shore. In Hong Kong, he learns that Zao is in Cuba. He travels to Havana, and while on the beach, he meets NSA agent Giacinta ‘Jinx’ Johnson. After having a innuendo conversation and spending a romp-filled night with Jinx, Bond follows Zao to a gene therapy clinic—a private and pricey establishment that allows patients to have their appearances altered—on Isla Los Organos, where he again runs into Jinx, who’s posing as a client to get within striking distance of Zao. Bond locates Zao’s room at the clinic and fights him, but Zao escapes in a helicopter. However, during the fight, Bond steals a pendant from Zao. Bond opens it and finds five diamonds, which Raoul identifies as conflict diamonds, each of which bears the laser signature (a unique identifier) of the company of British billionaire Gustav Graves.

Bond locates Graves at a fencing club in London, where he has arranged for a fencing lesson with Verity, and she and Bond engage in a hilarious conversation, about how Bond enjoys “keeping his sword always ready”. While there, he meets Graves and his fencing partner/public relations representative, Miranda Frost, who is a world champion in Olympic fencing. Bond engages Graves in a semi-friendly duel using real swords, putting up one of the diamonds as a wager. Bond wins, and Graves—in a show of feigned sportsmanship—writes a cheque to Bond for the market value of the diamond and invites him to a ceremony that Graves is holding in Iceland, where he will be conducting a scientific demonstration.

In a derelict London Underground station, M restores Bond’s 00 status and offers assistance in the investigation in exchange for the intel he has gathered on Graves. Frost, actually another MI6 agent, had been sent by MI6 to learn Graves’ intentions, but she has failed to uncover anything. To further his inquest of Graves, Bond takes Graves up on his invitation at an ice palace Graves has prepared for the occasion, and there Bond meets Jinx again. That night, Graves demonstrates his new orbital mirror satellite (which he has dubbed “Icarus”)—an apparatus that can harness solar energy and focus it to provide year-round sunshine for crop development.

At midnight, Jinx infiltrates Graves’ palatial command center, where she finds Zao, who is trying again to use the Isla Los Organos technology to alter his appearance. Mr. Kil subdues her and straps her to a table, standing over her menacingly, intending to use a laser to kill her. She is briefly tortured. Fortunately for her, Bond arrives at that moment, and works together with Jinx to fry Kil’s brain with the laser. It then occurs to Bond that the equipment Zao was using to change his appearance is already on the premises and being used by another North Korean: Colonel Tan Sun Moon, who survived his plummet over the waterfall and has changed his own identity to that of Gustav Graves.

When Bond confronts Graves, Frost shows up and points her gun at Bond; Graves, who admits to being Moon, reveals her as Bond’s betrayer. Bond attempts to shoot Graves but finds that the firing pin of his P99 is bent, immediately realizing that Frost tampered with it while in bed with him the previous night. Bond escapes from the pair and steals the high speed vehicle owned by Graves. Graves uses Icarus, his satellite, and increases its intensity so he can try to kill Bond. Bond accelerates the vehicle to over 200miles/hr and finally gets suspended over a glacier and opens the chute panel. Graves melts the glacier and Bond skies from the tidal wave (an impact due to the drowning of glacier) using the parachute from Grave’s vehicle and when re-entering the palace, takes flight in his Aston Martin Vanquish, followed closely by Zao, who pursues him in a Jaguar XKR through the rapidly melting ice palace (which Graves has exited and is using Icarus to destroy). Bond kills Zao by luring him under a collapsing chandelier, and then rescues Jinx from drowning when she was trapped in Frost’s bedroom. After the confrontation, Bond and Jinx are deployed at the border between North and South Korea, where they infiltrate North Korea using experimental stealth sleds called Switchblades and parachutes. They stow away on Graves’ cargo plane, which is also carrying the arrested General Moon (who is unaware of his son’s new identity), his lieutenants, and Frost. Graves reveals the true purpose behind his creation of Icarus—he uses its beam to cut a swath through the minefield in the Korean Demilitarised Zone. Once the minefield is destroyed, North Korean troops can invade South Korea, reuniting the two countries through force. Icarus would also stop any interference from the Western nations by destroying any WMDs fired on North Korea. Graves wears a sophisticated armour that not only gives him electrifying capabilities, but allows him to control the Icarus satellite remotely. In an attempt to preserve peace, General Moon draws a gun on his son, but Graves uses his armour to electrocute and disarm the general and then Graves shoots him.

Bond advances to kill Graves, but is thwarted when one of Graves’ soldiers attacks him, causing him to shoot through a window and bringing about cabin depressurisation. Jinx manages to stabilise the plane, but is accosted by a sword-wielding Frost, who forces her to set the plane’s controls to autopilot. While doing so, Jinx alters the plane’s heading so that it will fly directly into the beam cast by Icarus. During the climatic catfight that follows, Jinx kills Frost with a knife to the chest. In the cabin, Graves gains the upper hand against Bond and puts on a parachute. Bond pulls Graves’ ripcord, causing the parachute to open inside the cabin, and the slipstream pulls Graves out of the plane, sucking him into one of the engines, shutting down Icarus. Bond and Jinx escape the plane using a helicopter in the cargo hold, along with a large number of Graves’ diamonds.

This is a clever big-screen adaption of the popular '70s TV series. A trio of martial arts trained detectives with drop dead gorgeous looks work exclusively for an unseen boss 'Charlie' Townsend(John Forsythe). The angels are played by Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu. With the sometimes inept help of Charlie's assistant Bosley(Bill Murray), the striking detectives investigate a kidnapping and retrieve some highly technical software that could lead to the death of their boss.

Also in the cast of this fun, run and gun romp are:Tim Curry, Matt LeBlanc, Kelly Lynch and a very impressive villain played by Crispin Glover. If you have yet to fall in love with Miss Diaz, you deserve no mercy. She proves again to be charming, sexy and very talented. Miss Barrymore also has that way of being funny while not losing an ounce of sex appeal.

Although contrived and a bit silly this movie is an action filled escape. There is no doubt that this explosive trio of crime-fighters will be back to use their skills and complete their mission. Thank you, Angels!

Theriyathu

Discussion of this summer’s heroine lack is in full throttle. Last friday, New York’s Vulture blog asked, “Where are the Roles for Superwomen?; Stu at Defamer jumped off from there, ultimately suggesting an X-Men spin-off for Ellen Page; John at The Movie Blog listed reasons “Why Most Female Lead Action Films Don’t Succeed” (shocker: men can’t identify with or believe in strong — and strong — female characters). Now, adding to the conversation in the least noble way possible, USA Weekend presents the appropriately titled “Girls Want to Have Fun, Too”, a cover story (with the least flattering photos I’ve ever seen from its summer movie preview that spotlights Gwyneth Paltrow, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Liv Tyler as the “leading ladies” of the season’s three big comic book adaptations.

Of course, each of these three actresses are only secondary figures to their superhero counterparts (in Iron Man, The Dark Knight and The Incredible Hulk, respectively). But that’s not the worst of it: the women are asked what kind of super powers they would like to have in real life (how about in movie life, as in what superheroine they’d like to play?), and when questioned on the subject of women’s roles in superhero movies, each suggests that we’ve seen great progress:

How do you think women have changed in these kind of films over the years?
Gwyneth: There’s a reason why they’re hiring actresses like us. We’re all women, we’re all mothers, and we all normally do different films. There’s a certain understanding of who we are and what we bring and a certain respect for that.
Maggie: Twenty or 30 years ago, the women in these films were vapid and just appeared for extra silliness.
Liv: In all these films, our characters have real jobs and really fall in love and have real dilemmas. When you look at the history of the comic books, the women also have changed.

Well, maybe none of them has to suffer a wet t-shirt scene, ala Kirsten Dunst in Spider-Man, but that doesn’t mean things are truly better. Really, it would be much better if the women in these kinds of movies were the actual leads. And it’s not like we’ve never seen a great action heroine — two of the greatest action films of all time, Aliens and Terminator 2, both directed by James Cameron, feature non-sexualized, kick-ass female leads. Plus, as silly as they come, movies like Charlie’s Angels, Kill Bill, Lara Craft: Tomb Raider, Underworld and Resident Evil have shown that sexy female-led action films can be relatively successful, too.

So, why does it still take forever to get a Wonder Woman film off the ground? (The rumored re-cancellation of Warner Bros.’ Justice League movie is another bad sign for that one). Why are there no female spin-offs from the X-Men movies? Is Hollywood really dumb enough to think the disappointments of Catwoman, Aeon Flux, Elektra, Supergirl, Barb Wire, etc. can be blamed on the gender of their stars? Just as many male-led superhero movies have been terrible, right?

OK, so let’s compromise, at least. Give us a movie were there’s at least a male-female superduo, like Cloak and Dagger or even The Wonder Twins. Or give Wolverine a sidekick, either Kitty Pryde or Jubilee, in his next solo outing.

Story:Dan Brown’s novels are packed with fascinating historical tidbits which he ingeniously twists into plots that are so intricate and complex that there is a constant need to inform the reader with exposition, often leaving little room for character development. There is a bit of this stilted quality to ANGELS AND DEMONS, the second of Brown’s novels to be brought to the big screen by the tandem of Ron Howard and Tom Hanks, but more than enough intense action to keep the eyes of the audience as busy as their minds. The details of the plot are as diabolical as any in Hollywood history: after the pope’s death, a nefarious organization stashes an antimatter bomb somewhere in the Vatican, threatening to annihilate the conclave of cardinals who are meeting to elect the papal successor. To pass the time until the bomb will detonate, the enemy begins to torture and kill a few of the individual cardinals, but there is a pattern to the grotesque executions, involving hidden sculptural symbols and secret architectural clues. Unfortunately for the church, the man most capable of deciphering the code is the American “symbologist” Robert Langdon (Hanks), who happens to be an affirmed atheist. The script is filled with amazing details about the centuries-old conflict between the church and the Illuminati (whose members included Galileo, Michelangelo, and Bernini), which Hanks uncovers as he breathlessly races between various landmarks in Rome, always a step behind the sinister assassin. The secondary cast consists almost entirely of European actors, including Ewan McGregor, Stellan Skarsgaard, and Armin Mueller-Stahl, who betray so little emotion that it is impossible to tell who is a part of the conspiracy until long after the explosive climax.

None of the recent wuxia martial art epics can seem to avoid the the endemic schlockiness of the genre, so as a viewer we are just content to find one that isn’t altogether too offensive in this regard. We think that Three Kingdoms manages to do that. There’s some good action, though nothing you haven’t seen before — the hail of spears and arrows, the beheaded enemies, the evil vixen (Maggie Q) playing pipa while men are being slaughtered, and of course, the de rigeur moral message about the evils of war and humanity’s inability to end violence with violence.

The film is based on one of the classics of Chinese literature, The Three Kingdoms> (三国演义), and focuses mostly on the character of Zhao Zilong (赵子龙), one of the legendary warriors in the book. There’s nothing too deep or particularly memorable about his journey from being a nobody in the army to becoming legendary heartthrob general, but Andy Lau (刘德华) does a competent enough job of it, even though his perfect teeth don’t really jibe with the character.

There are great actors like Ti Lung, and then there are not so great actors, like Maggie Q, Vanness Wu (he of F4 boy band fame), and Sammo Hung. We’ve been reading some reviews, and most of them seem to say something alone the lines of what we read in Cinema Online:

With “Kingdoms”, you feel that it could have been a five star film if a few things were improved here and there. Before John Woo’s “Red Cliff” hits the screens, it’s still a good bet for almost-there entertainment. One thing though – Vanness Wu should never be in the same picture as Lung Ti. Harshly said, boy band members have no place in war epics, at least not one with Shaw Brothers’ icons in it.

Twitch has a slightly more critical view of the film:

These days with so many period epics on the way or already released, you can literally create a checklist for their requisites. Beautiful costumes: check. Stylish weapons: check. Breathtaking landscapes: check. Armies of thousands: check. Exciting martial arts and action sequences?

This genre has really gone the way of “all style and no substance” which is somewhat ironic, given that the whole reason why the Three Kingdoms is such a classic in the Chinese world is not just because it’s a good yarn, but because it’s moving. The characters are moving. Their relationships, their words, deeds, and actions are memorable. People know so much of these stories by heart. That’s a challenge to any filmmaker, so believe us that we aren’t trying to slag off this director as not worthy of the challenge; few directors could be. However, you’d think that character development would not be as short-shrifted as it regularly is.

Fans of wuxia and Three Kingdoms might like this one, the rest of you should not encounter any existential crisis if you miss it.-www.shanghaiist.com

When his family doesn’t have enough money to pay the rent, Fool is persuaded by Leroy (Ving Rhames) to break into his landlord’s house to steal a valuable coin collection. Once Fool and Leroy are inside the huge and heavily fortified house, they realize they’ve gotten more than they bargained for, as the landlords turn out to be an insane brother and sister couple (Everett McGill and Wendy Robie) who murder visitors and keep their kidnapped “sons” locked up in the basement as deformed monsters. Only Alice, an imprisoned girl, can save Fool from the horrors within, and a frantic chase begins between the walls of the bizarre house as Fool tries to save himself, Alice, and his community from the evil landlords. A unique and inventive horror film, THE PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS combines the structure of a classic fairy tale with modern social criticism and imaginative production design. Director Wes Craven based his film on real-life news reports of parents who kept their children locked up at home.

Black Sheep – 2007
Starring: Nathan Meister, Danielle Mason, Peter Feeney, Tammy Davis
Director: Jonathan King

Movie review
A treat for horror-comedy fans, Kiwi filmmaker Jonathan King’s ‘mutant killer sheep’ movie is as lively as a spring lamb, as bloody as a bucketful of offal, and as tongue-in-cheek comic as its original poster tagline promised: ‘There are 40 million sheep in New Zealand… and they’re pissed off!’ With affectionate nods to Peter Jackson’s early splatter comedies, ‘Bad Taste’ and ‘Braindead’, it cuts right to the funny bone. Blending gags and gore can be tricky, but King maintains a perfect balance between sheep-shagging silliness and character-based comedy.

Sheep-phobic Henry Oldfield (Nathan Meister) returns to the family farm to claim a buy-out payment from his older brother, Angus (Peter Feeney), a dyed-in-the-wool sheep-fancier who takes a hands-on approach to the engineering of a new super-breed. But before Henry can flee, a pair of animal rights activists, Experience (Danielle Mason) and Grant (Oliver Driver), unleash mayhem. Their accidental release of a mutated sheep foetus transforms the entire herd from cuddly to cannibalistic. With the help of farmhand Tucker (Tammie Davis) and repentant eco-warrior Experience, Henry fights a rearguard action. But he hasn’t reckoned with the mutant strain jumping the species barrier, changing bitten humans into flesh-craving weresheep.

Knowing without being geeky, bloody without being nasty, ‘Black Sheep’ is one of the few films one would dare mention in the same sentence as the touchstone of all horror comedy, ‘An American Werewolf in London’. The performances may be uneven, but the flawed characters are believable, the sheep surprisingly scary and the animal antics often laugh-out-loud funny.

Hercules In New York Tamil Dubbed Hollywood Movie

Directed by Arthur A. Seidelman

Starring James Karen, Deborah Loomis, Arnold Stang, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mark Tendler

Every movie star has to start somewhere, and Arnold Schwarzenegger, then little-known outside of body building circles, made his screen debut in this comic variation on the “sword and sandal” epics popular in the 1950’s and ’60’s. Hercules (Schwarzenegger) has grown tired of his life on Mount Olympus, and wishes to visit Earth. His father Zeus (Ernest Graves) forbids such a voyage, but a misdirected thunderbolt sends Hercules tumbling down the mountain and into New York City, where he’s befriended by Pretzie (Arnold Stang), who runs a pretzel cart in the park. As Hercules tries to make his way in the big city with Pretzie’s help, he runs afoul of a crooked wresling promoter, gets mixed up with gangsters, rides his chariot through Times Square, descends into Hell, and dines at the Automat (which some contend is not unlike descending into Hell). Just as Hercules is getting used to life on Earth, his angry father decides it’s time the boy came home, and Zeus sends Nemesis (Taina Elg) and a handful of other gods to retrieve him. For the original American release of Hercules In New York, Arnold Schwarzenegger was billed as Arnold Strong, and his voice was dubbed by another actor to remove his accent; when the film was re-released on video in 2000, Schwarzenegger’s original vocal tracks were restored, though the dubbed version appears on several previous video releases. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Finding Nemo Tamil Dubbing Movie

It was with a great deal of trepidation that I found myself at a recent preview screening of “Finding Nemo.” First off, I don’t usually like ‘kids’ movies. Secondly, I’m not a big fan of animated films in general. “Finding Nemo” combines the two, making it the sort of film I dread seeing the most.

I’m not too proud to admit that I was wrong – dead wrong. “Finding Nemo” is a family movie, not a kids’ movie. And there’s no way this could simply be lumped into the ‘animated’ film category; the creatures in “Finding Nemo” are more real than some flesh and blood actors. No more than 10 minutes into the movie, I found I was totally enchanted by this gorgeous, captivatingly illustrated fish tale. The ocean and its creatures fairly leap off of the screen, so vibrant and alive are each of the characters.

With voices provided by some big name stars including Ellen DeGeneres, Albert Brooks, and Willem Dafoe, “Finding Nemo’s” fish have all been endowed with separate and distinct personalities. Dory (DeGeneres) has no short-term memory and provides the film with heart. There’s Marlin, a clown fish that embodies all the neuroses of an Albert Brooks character, voiced by, well, Albert Brooks. Willem Dafoe’s ‘Gill’ is the most serious – dare I say dark and dramatic – fish, in keeping with that actor’s style.

“Finding Nemo” follows the misadventures of Marlin, an overly protective single dad trying his best to raise his only child, Nemo. Nemo’s a pretty typical kid; he wants to strike out on his own, have a little fun, and go wherever his father says not to go. On Nemo’s first day of school, Marlin follows him around, giving guidance when it’s not wanted, and embarrassing him in front of his new classmates. Pushed too far, Nemo disobeys a direct order and winds up captured by divers and taken to live in a dentist’s fish tank.

It’s up to Marlin to track down his son and bring him home. As he dashes off after the divers’ boat he meets Dory, a blue tang with an aggravatingly short memory. Together they set off to Sydney Harbor and the dentist’s office. Along the way they run into a group of sharks who belong to a ‘Fish are Friends, Not Food’ support group, a forest of deadly jellyfish, sea turtles who talk like California surfers, and other miscellaneous finned and feathered comedic creatures. And yes, there’s a positive message about friends and family incorporated smoothly into the story but don’t worry, it’s not saccharine or preachy.

“Finding Nemo” is one of those rare gems that transcends age groups. Kids, teenagers, adults, men, women, fish fans, people with a sense of humor, etc., will find themselves thoroughly entertained by this funny and touching fast-paced film.

And just a word of warning: After watching “Finding Nemo,” you’ll never look at seagulls the same way again.

Director: Gore Verbinski

The second part of a trilogy, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN’S CHEST is a fantastic tale of pirates, love, and the supernatural. Blacksmith Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and his upper-class love Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) are preparing to wed when they are confronted with a warrant for their arrests because they helped the notorious pirate Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) escape the authorities. Their only choice for a pardon is to find Jack and return to Lord Cutler Beckett (Tom Hollander) with the flamboyant captain’s compass. Will’s attempt to track Jack down, however, becomes an adventure unto itself: Jack is being held captive on an island where the natives think he is a god. To make matters worse, the infamous Davy Jones (Bill Nighy) and his Flying Dutchman crew are after Jack, seeking his soul to repay a debt. With his beard of tentacles and a lobster claw for a hand, heartless Jones is no mere mortal. He and his men are slowly evolving, taking on the attributes of various sea creatures, and with the help of a giant sea monster, the Kraken, they rule the waters. Seeking respite from his fate with Davy Jones, Jack enlists the aid of Tia Dalma (Naomie Harris), a practitioner of the supernatural, in an effort to locate the Dead Man’s Chest that supposedly contains Jones’s still-beating heart. Whoever possesses the heart controls Jones, and thereby controls the seas. And so the adventure continues as Jack, Will, and the Black Pearl crew track down the Flying Dutchman in search of redemption. This rollicking summer adventure, directed by Gore Verbinski (THE WEATHER MAN, THE RING), features multiple intersecting storylines, unique stunts, and a pithy script that lets each main character shine, while the costumes and makeup for Jones and his sea creature crew are nothing short of spectacular.

Pirates of the caribbean:The curse of the black pearl

Director:
* Gore Verbinski
Starring:
* Johnny Depp
* Orlando Bloom

Disneyland’s popular attraction gets the lavish Jerry Bruckheimer treatment in this tale of undead pirates, cursed gold and heroic derring-do that pays homage to and slyly subverts Hollywood’s classic swashbucklers. Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom star
Never mind the cursed Aztec treasure of the story, the real curse has been recent pirate movies in general, with audiences consistently telling the likes of Pirates, CutThroat Island and Hook to take a long walk off a short plank. Huge credit should go to screenwriters Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio for wittily deconstructing and refurbishing an over-familiar genre, just as they did in Shrek.

Here, the ruthless Captain Barbossa (Rush) and the scurvy villains aboard the Black Pearl freighter are desperately returning rather than stealing every last piece of gold. The pieces of eight are bedevilled and condemn them to drift in limbo and turn into ghoulish skeletons by moonlight. Their kidnapping of the governor’s daughter Elizabeth (Knightley) with the missing ingot, and attempted rescue by her humble blacksmith beau Will (Bloom) are traditional staples, but surely in no movie – pirate or otherwise – has there been a character like Johnny Depp’s fellow rescuer, the high seas chancer Captain Jack Sparrow.

Assuming that pirates were the 18th century rock stars, free spirits bound by no laws, Depp’s chosen to play Sparrow as Keith Richards. He’s got the flowing scarves and bandanna, the trinkets braided into his hair and beard, the gold-capped teeth, the rolling gait, the rum-soaked mumbling. Even the mascara.

The film opens in France, in 1641. The Scotsman Klan McCullen has been accused of selling weaponry to both the Scots and French. Rather than being executed for treason, the jury brands his face with a white-hot mask in order to humiliate him. In the near future, weapons expert James McCullen (Christopher Eccleston) has created a nanotechnology-based weapon capable of destroying an entire city. His company MARS sells four warheads to NATO, and the U.S. Army is tasked with delivering the warheads. Duke (Channing Tatum) and Ripcord (Marlon Wayans) are delivering the warheads when they are ambushed by the Baroness (Sienna Miller), who Duke recognized to be his ex-fiancee Ana Lewis. Duke and Ripcord are rescued by Scarlett (Rachel Nichols), Snake Eyes (Ray Park) and Heavy Duty (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje). They take the warheads to The Pit, G.I. Joe's command center in North Africa, and upon arriving rendezvous with General Hawk (Dennis Quaid), the head of the G.I. Joe Team. Hawk takes command of the war-heads and excuses Duke and Ripcord, only to be convinced to have them join his group after Duke reveals that he knows the Baroness.

McCullen is revealed to be using the same nanotechnology to build an army of soldiers with the aid of the Doctor (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), planning on using the warheads to bring panic and bring about a new world order. Using a tracking device, McCullen locates the G.I. Joe base and sends Storm Shadow (Lee Byung-hun) and the Baroness to retrieve the warheads with assistance from Zartan (Arnold Vosloo), inflicting casualties on several G.I. Joe soldiers. After a fight, Storm Shadow and the Baroness retrieve the warheads and take them to Baron DeCobray, the Baroness's husband, for him to weaponize and use them to destroy the Eiffel Tower to serve as a showing of the warhead's destructive power. Making their way to Paris, the Joes pursue them through the streets but are unsuccessful in stopping them from launching the missile. Duke manages to hit the kill switch, but in doing so he is captured and taken to McCullen's base under the Arctic.

G.I. Joe locates the secret base and fly there as McCullen loads three missiles with nano-mite warheads. After Snake Eyes takes out one, Ripcord pursues the remaining missiles in a prototype Night Raven jet while Scarlett and her group infiltrate the base. While Scarlett and Snake Eyes attempt to shut down the Arctic base, with Heavy Duty leading an attack on Cobra's forces, Duke learns that the Doctor is Rex Lewis, Ana's brother believed to have been killed on a mission led by Duke four years ago. He was trapped in a bunker with Doctor Mindbender (Kevin O'Connor), disfigured in the blast which everyone presumed had killed him. The Baroness tries to free Duke but the Doctor reveals he has implanted her with nano-mites which has put her under his control for the past four years, admitting his amazement that she is resisting the programming. Attempting to kill Duke, McCullen ends up being facially burned as he flees with Rex to an escape vessel. Duke and the Baroness pursue him while the Joes fall back when Rex activated the base's self destruct sequence.

Rex then heals McCullen's burned face with nano-mites, encasing it in silver as he christens McCullen "Destro" and assumes the identity of Cobra Commander before they are captured by G.I. Joe soon after. On board the supercarrier USS Flagg, Baroness is placed in protective custody until they can remove the nano-mites from her body. Meanwhile, Zartan, having been earlier operated on by Rex, infiltrates the White House during the missile crisis and assumes the identity of the President of the United States (Jonathan Pryce).

pathunkithakkuthal Hollywood Movie

Starring: Brian Cox, Brad Pitt, Brendan Gleeson, Diane Kruger, Eric Bana, Orlando Bloom, Garrett Hedlund, Sean Bean, Peter O’Toole, Julie Christie, Tyler Mane

Directed by Wolfgang Petersen
Produced by Wolfgang Petersen, Diana Rathbun, Colin Wilson
Written by David Benioff
A lot of people are foggy enough about the battle of Troy’s origins to confuse the story laid out in the “Iliad” with history. I’m sure you’ll hear more than one movie-goer comment on the film’s historical accuracy. Last night I heard at least two. But, like Hidalgo, The Passion, or maybe more like Harry Potter, Troy is another ambitious adaptation that only manages as solid entertainment.

The idea of taking Homer’s battle poem and turning it into a movie is a good one, since it instantly leans towards the epic and contains plenty of notable and screen worthy characters. It’s also a story strongly ingrained in our cultural consciousness, after centuries of required classroom reading. It has already received some comparison to Gladiator, but where that movie was a surely modern fighting flick, the story of Troy lends itself much more to Hollywood’s golden age, the sort of thing that would have attracted a younger Chuck Heston.

Troy is not exactly a throwback to the golden age of epic Hollywood filmmaking, but it is influenced by it. Filled with dusty and grandiose set pieces, it spans kingdoms and seas in following primarily two tales: That of Achilles (Brad Pitt) and his quest for eternal glory and that of Hector’s (Eric Bana) beleaguered, underappreciated defense of the land he loves. Both are dragged somewhat unwillingly into battle through the actions of others. For Hector, it is his irresponsible brother Paris (Orland Bloom) who brings down political trouble when he kidnaps the wife of King Menelaus (Brendan Gleeson), brother to Agamemnon (Brian Cox), King of all Greece. Menelaus isn’t the best husband, but he takes the theft of his wife Helen somewhat personally. The vicious and somewhat cartoonish Agamemnon seizes his brother’s rage as an opportunity to take the homeland of Princes Hector and Paris, an unconquerable kingdom across the sea named Troy.

While Hector’s motivations are somewhat simple defense of family and country, Achilles’ are much more complicated. He is already Greece’s greatest warrior. A reluctant tool of king Agamemnon he is unbeatable. An often gray and amoral figure, Achilles hungers for more. He has grown weary of battle, but desires immortality. With the attack on Troy billed as the biggest battle in history, he can’t resist another chance to get his name indelibly written in history books.

As Achilles, Brad Pitt is either naked or fighting. There’s no in between. Achilles is a guy who only wears clothes when he’s killing. I’m not sure what that says about his character. But don’t worry guys, it isn’t real Pitt nudity, just side-nudity. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever seen so much side-nudity in any film. I now know every intimate inch of Brad Pitt’s naked profile. Troy lacks the courage to show full frontal or even a little bit of ass crack. Odd for any other R-rated movie, but not really for this one which only barelyshows enough carnage to warrant a rated R. It could easily have slipped by as PG-13 and one has to wonder why they bothered at all with an R when the removal of even a thimble-full of blood could have garnered them something lesser. If you’re going to go R, make it worthwhile. Don’t be afraid of women’s breasts. Don’t run away from realistic battle sequences. Hey, throw in a couple of decapitations! This is war, not West Side Story.

What the film’s massive battle sequences sometimes lack in ugly realism is made only worse by Director Wolfgang Petersen’s strange propensity to focus in on one on one battles to the exclusion of all else. A hundred-thousand men clash on the field of battle, yet everything falls silent as soldiers form a big school-yard huddle whenever Hector picks up his sword. Should he dispatch a particularly difficult foe, he mutters “that’s enough” and all one-hundred thousand men just seem to wander home.

Maybe I’ve been permanently spoiled by Peter Jackson’s groundbreaking siege in The Two Towers, but Troy’s bigger and supposedly badder battles just can’t compare. Troy fails to garner any excitement from its massive scale, but Petersen does have an amazing gift for filming one on one action. The final big battle between Achilles and Hector is engrossing and amazing. That’s due in no small part to both Pitt and Bana’s impressive performances, in which both brilliantly capture the physicality of their respective characters.

Pitt is like a deadly viper, racing across battlefields using skill, speed, and daring to defeat any and every foe who steps in his way. He captures the physical aspects of his Achilles in a way I’m not sure anyone else could have. Even standing still he carries himself with an impressive lethality, waiting to spring unexpected from his perfect muscles to deliver unexpected devastation. As far as physical performances go, Brad Pitt excels beyond reason. Yet, when he speaks, he lacks authority. Achilles demands attention and respect. When he parts his lips, Pitt seems pensive and well… almost soft. It’s such a contrast to his dominating physical performance that it seems out of place. Achilles needs more power in his voice and as absolutely brilliant as he is physically, Pitt’s voice just doesn’t have it.

Eric Bana’s voice on the other hand has strength to spare. In fact, he may still be playing the Hulk, growling his way across the screen like a war elephant steeling himself for battle. Hector really is a nice contrast to Pitt’s Achilles, a more traditional warrior who fights with strength and bravery if not Achilles daring and speed. Bana makes him easy to cheer for, imbuing him with a sense of quiet nobility in the face of failures not of his own making.

Hector is the only truly sympathetic character in the movie, with the others landing in darkening shades of grey. Brian Cox’s Agamemnon is an over the top baddie, given little thought beyond his insatiable lust for conquest. Paris is a well meaning child who lacks the foresight to avoid dragging his country into trouble. Helen of Troy (Diane Kruger) is a beauty without a brain, caught up in her own passions without the ability to see beyond her perfect nose. Menelaus plays the victim, but is in reality a womanizing monster who cares less for his missing wife than he does for his wounded pride. King Priam of Troy is a good ruler, played capably by Peter O’Toole, letting his superstition of the gods cloud his better judgment. Odysseus (Sean Bean) seems like he might have been an interesting character, a genuinely good ruler caught up in Agamemnon’s plans. But then I’m only guessing since Sean Bean’s screen time can’t possibly equal more than ten or fifteen minutes, all of it spread evenly throughout the movie’s entire 169 minutes and much of it spent with him standing demurely in the background or repeating the same speech over and over to Achilles.

Still, it is impossible to walk away from Troy completely unsatisfied. Despite some major directing flaws, Petersen does deliver an enjoyably huge (if a little too long) period adventure. Women will no doubt swoon at the legions of male characters clad in thigh revealing leather costumes. Men will go insane over Achilles kicking ass against anything and everything that moves. Troy is big, grandiose, and entertaining. With such a marvelous cast, I wish Petersen had delivered a masterpiece, but I’ll settle for some solid sandal-wearing fun.
